Philip Straub

Philip Straub currently serves as executive vice president, managing director of the aviation division of Garmin International, Inc., a leading provider of avionics for general and business aviation, located in Olathe, KS. As an executive officer, Straub carries the P&L responsibility for the company’s aviation business segment and manages product development, flight operations, certification, sales, marketing, programs and support.

Since joining Garmin in 1993 as an embedded software engineer to his current appointment in 2011, Straub has held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility, contributing to the development and success of Garmin’s aviation business segment.

Straub is an active participant in aviation industry associations and committees. In 2018, he served as chairman of the board of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA). Straub has been serving alongside other industry leaders on the Drone Advisory Committee (DAC) of the FAA. In 2019, Straub was appointed by U.S. DOT Secretary Elaine L. Chao as one of 22 members to DOT’s new Safety Oversight and Certification Advisory Committee (SOCAC). He has a passion for promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education with an emphasis on aviation.

Straub earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri. In addition to his engineering skills, he is an accomplished pilot, earning his private pilot license while in high school at the age of 17. He continued to earn advanced ratings and certificates, working as a flight instructor while attending college and thereafter. Straub is an active pilot with more than 5,800 flight hours and currently holds an airline transport pilot certificate along with King Air BE-300, Citation CE-525S and Citation CE-560XL type ratings.
