Pilots utilizing New York’s Westchester County Airport (HPN) should prepare for runway closures beginning later this month. These closures will not affect the 2026 NBAA White Plains Regional Forum taking place at HPN on May 20, a date set in conjunction with airport management. NBAA has worked closely with HPN on planning for this event to ensure the forum doesn’t impact regular operations.
The airport, located 19 miles northeast of LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and 21 miles northeast of Teterboro Airport (TEB), sits in Class D airspace beneath the outer shelf of the New York Class B. HPN has two runways: Runway 16/34 measuring 6,549 by 150 feet, and Runway 11/29, which measures 4,451 by 150 feet. Runway 16/34, the primary runway, is due for maintenance.
“Beginning on March 29 and going through Nov. 23, the primary runway (16/34) will be closed nightly between midnight and 0530 local, between Monday and Friday. There will also be four separate 33-hour closures. One of those four extended closures is scheduled from 0930 on June 2 through 1830 local on June 3,” said Senior Manager NBAA Air Traffic Services Dean Snell.
Runway 11/29 will remain open during the Runway 16/34 closure times. The runway has aiming point marking and PAPI lights. Tall trees are approximately 527 feet from the runway threshold about 15 feet to the right of the centerline. Pilots should expect a steep approach (4:1 slope) and note the displaced threshold.
There are multiple instrument approaches to the airport. Runway 16/34 has ILS/LOC approaches including an ILS CAT I-II for Runway 16, as well as RNAV procedures Y and Z for both 16 and 34. There is also a visual approach authorized for Runway 34.
The airport also has four Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs): BOUNO FIVE, NOBBI ONE (RNAV), RICED FOUR and VALRE ONE (RNAV).
