The TSA announced that, effective May 1, Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) will replace Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) as a TFR gateway to Wilmington, Delaware’s New Castle Airport (ILG) when President Biden visits his home in Wilmington, DE.
Located approximately 70 miles west of Newark and 70 miles north of Wilmington, Lehigh Valley International Airport is one of the options NBAA presented to the TSA when discussing Presidential TFR operations, said Doug Carr, senior vice president of safety, security, sustainability and international operations.
NBAA suggested to TSA that Newark was not a good long-term TFR gateway because planned construction would reduce the airport capacity and increase airspace challenges, such as introducing ILG-bound general aviation traffic at an airport that primarily serves air carriers.
