Updated Jan. 15, 2025
Increased flight operations are expected at Washington Dulles International (IAD) and other airports in the Washington, DC area on Jan. 17-22, 2025, associated with the presidential inauguration on Jan 20.
Washington Dulles International (IAD)
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) will temporarily close Runway 1L/19R at IAD to create long-term aircraft parking. Operators should monitor NOTAMs for exact timing. This closure may begin on Friday, Jan. 17 or Saturday, Jan. 18.
IAD Departure Slot Requirements
- Departure slots will be required for aircraft departing IAD on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Departure slots can be obtained through your IAD FBO of choice (Atlantic Aviation or Signature Flight Support).
- Operators should provide FBOs with their arrival date and times, so FBOs are aware of flight details.
IAD Parking Plans
- Overnight or extended operations can expect to park at a remote parking location (Runway 1L/19R, Cargo 6, R Ramp at the base of the tower or the W apron).
- Operators should confirm parking upon initial contact (ARINC) with the FBOs with the possibility of being directed to a remote parking location.
- If assigned remote parking, aircraft must proceed directly to the remote parking location where the FBOs will have staff to transport passengers and crew to their facility.
- Remote parking areas will be designated non movement areas when being used for parking (see NOTAMs). FBO representatives will be present to guide aircraft in the parking areas.
- For Atlantic customers, drop-and-go operations will be using Runway 19C run-up block area, which will be designated a non-movement area for IAD tower. Drop-and-go operations will not use the main ramp at Atlantic.
- For Signature customers, Signature will do as much as possible to allow drop-and-go operations to utilize their main FBO ramp, to prevent these aircraft from being placed in secondary parking areas.
IAD Departure Procedures, Jan. 21-22
There will be special departure procedures out of Washington Dulles International on Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22. These special procedures are needed due to the volume of operations in addition to the non-standard parking areas on the west side of the airport (Runway 1L/19R and the west side of the W pad will be used for aircraft parking).

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
Business aviation access to DCA is limited to participants in the DCA Access Standard Security Program (DASSP). A TFR is expected for Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, that would prohibit DASSP operations while the TFR is active. Additional restrictions may limit DCA access during the key events before and after the inauguration.
Manassas Regional Airport / Harry P. Davis Field (HEF)
Reservations are not required for operations in and out of HEF, although NBAA Air Traffic Services recommends that flight operators contact their FBO at HEF to provide their flight schedule prior to operation in order to confirm parking availability.
Other DC Metro Area Airports
All DC metro airports are likely to see increased traffic demand.
NBAA Air Traffic Services recommends that aircraft operators planning to travel in the DC area contact their FBO of choice and provide their arrival and departure dates and times. This will help ensure that parking is available, and allow operators to receive advance instructions on where they can expect to park. Making reservations with an FBO will help to expedite both arrivals and departures. Operators should advise FBOs as to whether they will be a “drop-and-go” operation or if they will remain overnight.
