If business is taking you to Rome in the next week, business aircraft operators should be aware of an expected higher-than-normal number of aircraft due to the Saturday, April 26 funeral of Pope Francis.

All Prior Permission Required (PPR) releases at Rome airports, including Rome Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” Airport (LIFR) and Ciampino Airport (LIRA), are suspended from April 24–30.

During this time, all PPR requests will be reviewed and approved daily, with no advance guarantees. Once an operator receives approval, any modifications to the PPR, including date of arrival, operator or even aircraft type, will result in cancellation of the existing approval.

Any operator cancelling an approved PPR within 48 hours of scheduled arrival could face penalties of €500.

“Operators should be prepared for severe parking limitations and plan for the possibility of repositioning after passenger drop off, as well as enhanced security procedures and service provider overload, as handling companies, caterers and support services operate at maximum capacity,” said Sonia Carmesini, station manager, Universal Aviation Italy – Rome. “Operators and pilots should stay vigilant for rapidly changing restrictions and requirements.”
