With heads of state and other envoys traveling to Japan for the imperial transition, from Oct. 19-26, government flights bearing those passengers will have priority allocations for departures, arrivals and parking at 29 airports, according to Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau.
This priority includes ferry flights to outlying airports after passengers disembark at Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) and Narita International Airport, the primary destination.
The outlying airports are Kansai International; Chubu Centrair International, New Chitose, Fukuoka, Naha, Hakodate, Aomori, Hanamaki, Sendai, Niigata, Ibaraki, Shizuoka, Komatsu, Toyama, Okayama, Hiroshima, Yonago, Matsuyama, Takamatsu, Yamaguchi-Ube, Kitakyushu, Nagasaki, Saga, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki and Kagoshima
During this period, the Civilian Aviation Bureau said non-scheduled flight operations must work around the priority allocations.
“Your understanding and cooperation would be appreciated,” the bureau said. “You might be able to use the above airport(s) for non-scheduled flight even during the above period, subject to no hindrance to the airport operation or to humanitarian purposes.”
Japan is the world’s oldest continuing hereditary monarchy, according to records dating back to the early Fourth Century. After 30 years on Japan’s Chrysanthemum Throne, Emperor Akihito abdicated on April 30, 2019, the first emperor to do so since 1817.
