Flight Procedures & Charting Updates

Avionics: Mandates, Data Link & Navigation

With avionics controlling more functions in the cockpit, it’s more important than ever to understand basic GPS navigation and data link technologies when flying abroad. This session will provide an understanding of basic data link, global data link issues, the new ½ degree waypoints, and using GPS in non-WGS-84 airspace.

Security Overview

IOC’s 2016 Security Panel will address several key topics at the forefront of the aviation community’s concerns. Moderated by Charlie LeBlanc, a long-time member of NBAA’s Security Council and aviation security expert. Philip Skotte from the U.S. Department of State will review the roles of their international diplomatic missions in supporting travelers and businesses overseas in case examples, with specific attention to not just what the Embassy/Consulate can do, but also what it cannot do, thus allowing more realistic advance planning when facing a small or large crisis situation. Matt Burdette will lead a review of key international safety and security concerns. Lastly John Zban will cover elements of cybersecurity and data protection overall and of relevance to the aviation community including understanding and mitigating flight tracking concerns.

There are many unique situations that face operators when flying to South America. This session will focus in on the particular aeronautical and operational procedures that make this region very complicated for flight operations. We will bring local knowledge and expertise to discuss the wide variety of requirements of permits, slots, parking, ground services, visas, customs, weather, and flight plans that are unique to the area. The latest information from airport officials in Rio on the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics will be disseminated in order for operators to plan accordingly. The session will contain enough time for operators to ask questions or to share experience and best practices for operations in the region.

Additionally, the session will address changing US rules related to Cuba, security concerns throughout the region, CIQ (customs, immigration & quarantine) procedures, operational curfews, SMS considerations and special planning for fuel availability in remote locations.

Looking to Fly in All the Wrong Places: Sanctioned Countries and Hazardous Airspace

Planning and operational considerations for identifying, avoiding, and possibly even operating into sanctioned countries and/or airspace. ICAO vs. FAA/KICZ/NOTAM address will be discussed, along with common insurance underwriting restrictions and FAC lists. Real-world planning and permitting scenarios into sanctioned countries will be addressed, along with recent operator’s experiences in these types of operations.

International 101: Global Trip Planning for the New or Occasional International Operator

This session will cover operational highlights of key destinations in Europe, including any recent changes over the past year. The topics to be covered include slots, parking, SAFA checks, operational curfews, CIQ and upcoming events. As a newer area of focus, there will also be an introduction to the airports and general aviation situation in the Balkan region of Europe (the former-Yugoslav countries in addition to Romania and Bulgaria). There are no real Western FBOs in this region, so the challenges on the ground can be numerous and require extra attention from all involved.

When Plans Don’t Go As Planned
