Kern Award Winner Christopher Bing Says Safety Is Synonymous with Flying

Throughout Christopher Bing’s career in business aviation, safety and flying have been synonymous. Starting from his internship as a college student at DuPont Aviation and continuing to his present responsibilities as manager of safety for Raytheon Technologies, Bing’s passion as a pilot has always been safety.

“For me, safety and flying have always gone hand-in-hand,” said Bing. “Even as a student, I learned early on that safety was always at the forefront of what DuPont did.” More than 8,000 flying hours later – many of them as pilot in command in the Falcon 2000EX, Gulfstream G600 and Bombardier Global Express – Bing has gained the respect of others in the industry as always being available and engaged when it comes to questions, concerns and information about safety.

Not surprisingly, he is one of the recipients of the 2020 Tony Kern Professionalism in Aviation Award, and his willingness to share information and his experiences is well-known. As the former long-time chair and still primary contact for the many members of the Northeast Safety Roundtable, Bing fields numerous inquiries and facilitates many discussions about aviation safety issues, including the roles of C-FOQA, ASAP, IS-BAO and more. At RTFlight, for some 15 years Bing has managed all aspects of the company’s safety program, in addition to his flying responsibilities, which often take him overseas.

“It’s important to be a role model and to pass on your knowledge,” said Bing. “Since a lot of people helped me early in my career, I feel like it’s part of the deal to continue helping the next group. For me, the Kern Award is a reflection of the people who came before me and helped show me the ropes.”

A self-avowed voracious reader, Bing stays current on all things safety and notes that there is always something to learn. “I’m always trying to get better and educate myself as much as I can.”
