NBAA is launching a Sustainable Flight Department Accreditation program that is designed to further advance a sustainability culture in business aviation by recognizing those organizations that meet or exceed criteria in four separate accreditations:
- Flight – Reducing the environmental impact of conducting flights (e.g., carbon emissions) and creating efficiencies.
- Operations – Optimizing a sustainability culture with an emphasis on the CO2 emissions as a result of personnel air travel and implementation of environmental programs (e.g., recycling, reduction of resources).
- Ground support – Implementing sustainable strategies related to equipment that supports business aviation operations (e.g., aircraft tugs, owned/leased vehicles).
- Infrastructure – Advancing sustainability through physical infrastructure (e.g., hangars, facilities).
The program will encourage organizations to think and act critically, implementing as many sustainability strategies as possible. It also will help entities advance on the pathway to meaningful but attainable change while enabling them to obtain third-party confirmation for their sustainability efforts.
The sustainable accreditation program is designed to further advance a sustainability culture in business aviation.
To achieve accreditation, entities will need to collect and submit quantitative and qualitative data, which will be reviewed by NBAA during desktop audits. A select number of applicants also will be audited in person.
Accreditations will cost $3,000 and will be valid for three years. The application process is slated to begin in early 2022, with more information coming soon

Professional Development
IS-BAO Fundamentals Course to be Offered at IOC
A course that will teach attendees the basics of the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) safety program will be conducted on March 17, the day after the International Operators Conference (IOC), which will be held March 14-16 in Los Angeles.
The workshop, which will be taught by Katherine Hilst, the IS-BAO program manager for the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC), will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the IS-BAO program and safety management systems (SMS) in general, enabling them to confidently start the IS-BAO implementation process.
For those who have already implemented IS-BAO, this course will help them prepare for an audit, reinforce the current IS-BAO concept and provide information on key changes to the safety standard.
