Encore Podcast: Navigating the Tricky Waters of State Taxes

As we near the end of 2017, NBAA takes a look back at some of the most popular Flight Plan podcasts of the year. Discussing the complexity of state taxes in the purchase, sale or license of an aircraft, Jordan Miller, of CenterPoint Aviation Law, noted it’s important to be aware that each state has its own tax laws regarding aviation. “Each of those may impose a number of different types of taxes on the ownership of the aircraft, the use of the aircraft or even the value of the aircraft,” he said. Miller recommended making sure the aircraft is appropriately registered in the owner’s home state, investigating places the aircraft regularly flies and the types of taxes those states imposes and keeping detailed documentation of trips.
