Preparing for the scourge of winter is essentially a year-round process for airports and ATC. As the country experiences frigid temperatures, snow and ice, and all the associated challenges that come with winter flying, business aircraft operators need to be aware of possible impacts, even from storms hundreds of miles from their planned route. “The FAA has tools year-round that identify constrained areas, ground delay programs, aerospace flow programs [and] ground stops,” said Dean Snell with NBAA Air Traffic Services. “It’s good to keep an eye on those [and] maybe look at alternate plans or at least be aware of the likely delays.”

In this episode of NBAA’s “Flight Plan,” host Rob Finfrock speaks with:

  • Michael Fawaz, director of Willow Run Airport (YIP), the 2023-2024 recipient of the Balchen/Post Award for outstanding performance in responding to snow and icing conditions
  • Dean Snell, manager at NBAA Air Traffic Services
