Las Vegas, NV, October 11, 2011 – The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) offers a wide range of scholarships that encourage young people to seek careers in business aviation. Conklin Business Aviation Management Scholarship, USAIG/PDP Scholarship, William M. Fanning Maintenance Scholarship, NORDAM Dee Howard/Etienne Fage Scholarship and David W. Ewald Journalism Scholarship.
Lawrence Ginocchio Aviation Scholarship
The Lawrence Ginocchio Aviation Scholarship was created in 2001 by NBAA and the family and friends of the late Lawrence Ginocchio to honor his outstanding personal contribution to business aviation. Recipients should possess a passion for aviation, as Larry Ginocchio did, and have utilized their interest or involvement in business aviation to enhance the lives of others. The following students received this award:
Alan H. Conklin Business Aviation Management Scholarship
The Conklin Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Al Conklin, a U.S. Air Force veteran, business aviation leader and member of NBAA’s Operations Committee for many years. This year’s recipient is Christine Dow, a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University pursuing a BS in business administration, air transportation, with a minor in air traffic management. She has been an intern with Rolls-Royce Regional Customer Training Center and is interested in airport management.
USAIG PDP Scholarship
The U.S. Aircraft Insurance Group (USAIG) PDP Scholarship provides funds for students to take NBAA Professional Development Program (PDP) courses. This year’s recipient is Teressa Lau, a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University pursuing a BS in aeronautical science and a minor in unmanned aircraft systems. She has a private pilot’s license, instrument rating, and commercial pilot multi-engine with over 144 hours.
William M. Fanning Maintenance Scholarship
The Fanning Scholarship is named in honor of retired NBAA staff member William M. Fanning, who was active in maintenance issues during his nearly 20-year tenure at the Association. This year’s recipients are as follows:
NORDAM Dee Howard/Etienne Fage Scholarship
The NORDAM Dee Howard/Etienne Fage Scholarship was created by The NORDAM Group to honor the lifetime achievements of two aerospace engineering pioneers, Dee Howard and Etienne Fage. Receiving the award this year is Amanda Bjorkland, a sophomore at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in electrical engineering. She previously served in the U.S. Navy, completed Naval Nuclear Power School, and interned with NASA. She also has served in the Civil Air Patrol.
David W. Ewald Journalism Scholarship
NBAA established the David W. Ewald Journalism Scholarship in 2007 to benefit a student intending to pursue a career in journalism. The scholarship is named in honor of Dave Ewald, who spent nearly 50 years serving the business aviation community as a magazine publisher and industry spokesperson. This year’s recipient is Kara Philp, a journalism student at Arizona State University who previously served in the U.S. Air Force as a public affairs specialist. She also was previously deployed to Iraq and used her journalism skills in a combat zone.
