Royal Shoen
Vice President, Aviation, U-Haul
Royal Shoen’s grandfather, the founder of U-Haul, was a pilot, using his Cessna 182 to identify growing areas and expand the U-Haul dealership network. As a result, Shoen caught the aviation bug early, attended EAA AirVenture every year and started flying at 16. She started at U-Haul washing trucks and moved through the ranks, immediately understanding the role airplanes play in the company. Shoen was selected to run the flight department because she understood the purpose of airplanes are instruments and tools for the company and its customers.
“Being a pilot has given me opportunities and opened doors. Aviation is the ultimate even playing field. It doesn’t matter your gender or skin color – if you can fly a plane, you can fly a plane,” says Shoen.
