Las Vegas, NV Oct. 13, 2025 – In a year when aviation safety has been in sharp focus, the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) has unveiled a new resource for supporting safety, based on expert analysis of real-world incidents and accidents.
NBAA’s new Spotlight on Safety Accident Compendium, introduced at this year’s Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), examines root causes and lessons learned from 15 key business aircraft accidents from recent years.
“As we all know, this has been a year marked by a number of troubling incidents and tragic accidents, including those involving business aviation,” noted NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “Some of this year’s incidents have involved longstanding root causes. By examining actual recent events with known causal factors, we can highlight the best practices needed to mitigate the likelihood of similar outcomes in the future.”
The compendium’s analysis of business aviation events and guidance for accident avoidance is based on National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) data and the board’s proven methodology of finding data-driven solutions to improve safety by identifying key factors that often contribute to aircraft accidents.
With an insightful foreword by well-known transportation safety advocate, accident investigation authority and former NTSB Chair Robert Sumwalt, the NBAA compendium details findings by business aviation safety experts and aircraft accident investigators surrounding relatively common safety failures – including how rapidly deteriorating weather conditions can contribute to loss of control inflight, or how flight crew distractions can lead to failure to follow safety procedures – any of which can lead to tragic consequences.
The compendium will be first available in print form to attendees at NBAA-BACE, the world’s most powerful business aviation event, with copies on hand at the show’s NBAA Single-Pilot Safety Standdown and NBAA Small Operator Symposium on Monday, Oct. 13, as well as the NBAA National Safety Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 14 and Wednesday, Oct. 15.
The new compendium is the latest addition to the host of ways NBAA has focused on safety this year, including the development of resources for industry. For example:
- Earlier this year, an NBAA News Hour webinar titled “Is it Safe to Fly?” brought together leading experts to discuss expanded application of technologies toward accident reduction, an increased use of data sharing to continually refine safety training and a recommitment to a just-culture framework for accident assessment.
- Also this year, Bolen highlighted proven approaches to operational safety in written testimony for a House subcommittee hearing. Bolen’s testimony encouraged the expansion of programs like the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) initiative.
- Shortly after the hearing took place, NBAA led a panel held as part of a safety-focused FAA Call to Action gathering focused on established and new ways of thinking to drive a safety-first mindset, on the ground and in the air.
- NBAA is also among several organizations that have joined the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s National Pause for GA Safety program, which emphasizes the sharing of best practices to help the industry maintain the highest possible safety standards.
