Cirrus Founders Among Newest to Be Inducted into National Aviation Hall of Fame

Alan and Dale Klapmeier, founders of Cirrus Aircraft, are among the 2014 inductees announced recently by the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Cirrus produces the SR20 and SR22 models, many of which are used in business aviation. The SR series – which features composite construction, all-electric instrumentation and whole-aircraft parachutes – has become popular for business applications due in part to its speed, well-equipped instrument panels and the turbocharged SR22T’s maximum operating altitude of 25,000 feet. Advocacy for Business Aviation Took Center Stage in 2013

Business aviation was affected by a number of governmental issues in 2013 – among the most notable was the federal government shutdown in October that led to the closure of the FAA’s Aircraft Registry.
That spurred NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen to issue a Call to Action, asking NBAA Members to use the Contact Congress tool on the NBAA website to make their feelings about the shutdown known to their lawmakers. The shutdown ended after 17 days, but not without a cost to business aviation: a report issued in November by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) indicates the delay in delivery of aircraft caused by the shutdown held up $1.9 billion worth of aviation assets. Preparations Well Underway for NBAA’s 2014 Business Aviation Regional Forums

In 2014, NBAA’s Business Aviation Regional Forums are returning to three of their most popular locations, with the first Regional Forum set for Jan. 30 in Boca Raton, FL. This will be followed by two events in the summer, in Van Nuys, CA on June 26 and Dallas, TX on Sept. 18. “All of our locations are in really strong markets next year, and we expect them to be well-attended,” said Joe Hart, NBAA director of static displays Hart said applications for both booth spaces and static display exhibits for the Boca forum are beating NBAA’s expectations, and a sold-out event is expected. Aviation Career Days Springing Up Around the Country

Regional business aviation groups around the country are increasingly holding career days, and other mentoring events, underscoring the importance of letting young people know about the opportunities in business aviation. “From several recent highly successful events for students in California, to the long-standing expo at Westchester County Airport in New York, regional aviation groups are putting in the time, effort and funds to help educate our young people about careers in business aviation as well as the importance of aviation to our nation,” noted Kristi Ivey, NBAA’s regional representative for the Northwest. At Aviation Hearing, Bolen Reiterates Concerns Over Sleep Apnea Changes, EU-ETS

A House committee hearing last week focused on aviation planning also provided a welcome opportunity for NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen to acknowledge the need for continuing congressional engagement on two issues with serious potential ramifications for the general aviation community. In written testimony submitted for before the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure Committee’s Aviation Subcommittee on “The State of American Aviation,” Bolen pointed to the industry’s alarm over the FAA’s new plan to mandate obstructive sleep apnea screening for some pilots prior to receiving a medical certificate. OpenAirplane Makes Renting Business Aircraft Easier

OpenAirplane is a Chicago-based company that combines the Internet, mobile apps and a growing network of aircraft providers to get more pilots into the air, regardless of where they are when they want to fly. Pilots can join OpenAirplane for free, but they must complete a universal pilot checkout (UPC). Designed to follow the FAA’s Practical Test Standards, the UPC is administered to OpenAirplane pilots once every 12 months. Successful completion of the UPC enables pilots to rent aircraft at any one of the participating flight schools and FBOs. Currently, there are 30 participating aircraft providers in the continental U.S. and Alaska, and more than 4,000 pilots have joined OpenAirplane. Bolen to Represent Business Aviation in Upcoming House Hearing

NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen will represent the interests of the companies of all sizes using business aviation at a Dec. 12 hearing before the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee’s Aviation Subcommittee on “The State of American Aviation” in the year ahead. NBAA Marks the Passing of Former Chairman E.E. Dunsworth

NBAA marks the passing of former chairman E.E. “Dunny” Dunsworth, who served on the Association’s Board of Directors from 1964 to 1973, and as board chairman from 1969 to 1971. Dunsworth passed away on Nov. 8 at age 88. In addition to serving in NBAA leadership positions from 1960-1978, Dunsworth helped found the Houston Aviation Association, and in 2004, was presented with NBAA’s Silk Scarf Award for his lifelong contribution to business aviation. Chicago Area Business Aviation Association Awards New Scholarship

A $4,000 scholarship focused on air traffic control (ATC) was awarded for the first time this year by the Chicago Area Business Aviation Association (CABAA), in memory of a long-time member. Lewis University senior Michael Indelli was presented the inaugural Ken Johnson Memorial ATC Scholarship. Indelli is working toward a degree in ATC management at Lewis University. New NBAA Program to Allow More Interaction Between Association Staff, Member Representatives

NBAA has launched a new regional program called Insights Connection to improve communication with its Members. “We had requests from Members for more personal interaction between Members and senior staff at NBAA,” said Stave Hadley, director of regional programs and Southwest regional representative. “The idea is to form a two-way connection between NBAA staff and Members in their own backyard. That way, together we can focus on the issues that are important to all of us.” The first NBAA Insights Connection meeting is scheduled to be held in the Northeastern U.S. early next year. Leader of U.S. Conference of Mayors Joins Aviation Alliance Board

In a further demonstration of the significance of general aviation to communities across the United States, the Alliance for Aviation Across America recently announced that Mesa, AZ Mayor Scott Smith will join its Board of Directors. NBAA Marks the Passing of Former Chairman David Woodrow

NBAA marks the passing of a former NBAA chairman and the first chairman of the International Business Aviation Council, David M. Woodrow, who died on Oct. 16 at age 88. Woodrow, whose involvement with NBAA spanned two decades, was a member of the Association’s Board of Directors from 1976 to 1989, and he served as chairman from 1981 to 1983. He was also an important figure in the 1981 launch of the International Business Aviation Council and served as the group’s first chairman from 1981 to 1987. Read more about David Woodrow.

NBAA Staff, Local Leaders Tackle Regulatory Challenges at Seattle Town Hall

Regulatory and legislative issues – both at the national and state level – were on the agenda at last week’s informational town hall meeting at Boeing Field in Seattle, hosted jointly by NBAA and the Pacific Northwest Business Aviation Association (PNBAA). In addition to providing the latest regulatory and legislative updates for the NBAA and PNBAA members in attendance, the meeting attracted the leadership of a number of regional aviation groups, including the Washington Pilots Association and the Washington Airport Managers Association. State Senator Jim Honeyford, R-15th Legislative District, also attended the town hall and expressed his support of business aviation and his understanding of the importance of business aviation to the state of Washington. Proposed FAA Rule Would Expand Operational Flexibility for EFVS-Equipped Aircraft

A notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) published by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would dramatically expand operational flexibility for operators of aircraft equipped with enhanced flight vision systems (EFVS), while simultaneously imposing new training and currency requirements for pilots of those aircraft. Under the proposal, all operations will require FAA authorization to ensure the airworthiness of vision systems, as well as pilot training and currency, with one exception for Part 91 (other than subpart K). Piston and Turboprop Shipments Show Strong Growth, Jet Market Projects Upturn Next Year

General aviation (GA) shipments and billings worldwide showed strong but uneven increases throughout the first six months of 2013, according to new industry data, and revenue eclipsed $10 billion for the first time in five years. In the first half of 2013, global GA airplane shipments rose 8.9 percent over the same six-month period last year, from 931 aircraft to 1,014, according to data released by General Aviation Manufacturers Association. Also, industry research firm JETNET LLC statistics show demand for pre-owned business jets softened during the first half of the year, falling 7.8 percent. Cessna Internship Offers Aviation Students Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunities

Middle Tennessee State University student Brian Simmons and five other interns from flight schools around the country were given a remarkable opportunity this summer. For six weeks, they fanned out across the country in new Cessna 172s, tasked with creating excitement for flying and volunteering with different charities. The Cessna Discover Flying Challenge, which just wrapped up its second year, was dreamed up by college students and Cessna staffers at Experimental Aircraft Association’s AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI, two years ago. The interns work with Cessna Pilot Centers and affiliates around the country and participate in their events, where they’re trying to interest people in learning to fly, while also partnering with charity organizations. At a recent NBAA Flight Attendants Conference in Washington, DC, a seminar on international cuisine and customs entitled “Around the World in 20 Minutes” drew a standing-room only crowd. NBAA Member Companies are increasingly flying to the destinations covered in the seminar: Brazil, Russia, India and China – or “BRIC” countries – and the session provided an overview of what passengers from those countries might expect in terms of food offered and service provided. “You want to keep from being embarrassed with passengers who expect you to know different things about their culture,” said Paula Kraft of Tastefully Yours Catering, who serves on NBAA’s Flight Attendants Committee. Forecasts Predict Long-Term Positive Growth of New Business Jet Deliveries

Recent industry forecasts predict a sustained rebound in the business aviation market starting this year and extending into the next decade and beyond. Business aircraft maker Bombardier Aerospace released its annual 20-year forecast for the business and commercial aircraft markets. The company’s Business Aircraft Market Forecast estimates deliveries of about 24,000 business jets, valued at $650 billion, from now until 2032. Aircraft services firm Zenith Jet estimates total deliveries of 9,234 business jets worth $255 billion between 2013 and 2022. Read more about projected growth for business aviation.

Arizona Camp Engages Young Girls in Considering Aviation Careers

The Arizona Girl Scout Council’s Discover Aviation Camp, which ran June 9 to 14, offered a unique opportunity for girls ages 13 and up to learn about the thrills of aviation, as well as the career opportunities offered to women in the industry. Twenty-three girls took part in this year’s camp, which was supported by NBAA, and held at the Prescott Municipal Airport in Prescott, AZ. The camp offered a broad overview of aviation, including ground school sessions on aerodynamics and flight planning, aircraft construction techniques, model building, aircraft engineering, accident investigation and air traffic control. Minnesota Business Aviation Association Fundraiser to Help Wounded Soldier

The Minnesota Business Aviation Association (MBAA), in conjunction with the Gary Sinise Foundation, will hold a Stars & Stripes Charity Gala on Friday, June 28, at the Signature Flight Support Facility on the St. Paul Downtown Airport, with proceeds going to support a wounded veteran. Funds raised will build a “smart home” in Duluth for U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Mark Litynski, who on his second deployment to Afghanistan in 2010, lost both legs above the knee and his left forearm to an improvised explosive device. MBAA hopes that its Stars & Stripes Gala Committee serves as a blueprint for other NBAA regional organizations to help grow awareness of the foundation’s work to support veterans. Modesto Residents Invited to ‘Discover Aviation’ at Airport Event

The first-ever “Discover Aviation” night was held on June 13 at Sky Trek Aviation at Modesto City-County Airport/Harry Sham Field (MOD). Invitations were sent to more than 4,500 households in Modesto and Stanislaus County identified as prime candidates for utilizing a general aviation (GA) airplane. Attendees met with local pilots and business owners, airport business management and control tower personnel. Copies of NBAA’s Business Aviation Fact Book, a white paper on “How to Use Your Airplane for Business” and the May/June edition of Business Aviation Insider magazine were available for attendees to learn more about the industry. Proposed Wright Brothers Monument Moves Forward

A proposed monument to the Wright brothers, near Dayton, OH is one step closer to becoming a reality following the successful completion of wing tunnel tests of a model of the Wright Flyer III replica aircraft that would sit atop a 250-foot-high pedestal. The tests indicated that the replica aircraft would be able to withstand winds of 200-plus miles per hour. The Wright Image Group is now conducting wind tunnel tests with a larger model atop a pedestal. Once that milestone is achieved, the group could begin construction of the monument, if funding permits. The group has raised about $1 million in money, land and architectural services and needs to raise another $11 million to finish the project. Learn more about the monument..

Business aviation plays a key role in driving economic growth in areas like Westchester County, county Executive Rob Astorino told the audience at the NBAA Business Aviation Regional Forum in White Plains, NY on June 6. Auburn Students, Alumni Contest Decision to ‘Sunset’ Aviation Program

Advocates fighting to preserve aviation-related curricula at Auburn University say they are in a “state of shock” following last week’s announcement that the school intent to outsource Auburn’s flight training program to a third-party. The university said it will “refer the existing degree in professional flight management to the University Senate’s Academic Program Review Committee for review and if the program is discontinued will work with the enrolled students to ensure they are able to complete their degrees.” Alumni, including NBAA representatives, and current students have been staging a grassroots effort to save the program and say they intend to keep fighting to preserve it. New and Pre-Owned Aircraft Markets Show Signs of Rebounding

Worldwide sales of new and pre-owned general aviation aircraft demonstrate that while the industry continues its gradual rebound, significant growth may still be years away. Last week, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association announced an encouraging upswing for deliveries of new general aviation (GA) aircraft, with first quarter billings improving 31.7 percent over the same period last year. Deliveries throughout all industry segments measured by GAMA improved over last year’s quarterly totals. The pre-owned aircraft market also appears to be improving in 2013, with a report by JetNet LLC listing slightly fewer aircraft for sale worldwide in February 2013 than in February 2012. Alumni, Students Rally to Save Auburn University Aviation Program

The aviation education program at Alabama’s Auburn University is at risk following a review by Aviation Accreditation Board International that determined the program lacks qualified tenured professors. The problem escalated further when the program’s senior tenured faculty member passed away last February, and the only other tenured aviation program professor has since announced his departure at the end of this semester. Founded in 1941, the aviation management program at Auburn University is the nation’s oldest continuously operated aviation program, and many of its approximately 3,800 graduates, including several NBAA staffers, have gone on to careers in the industry. NBAA offers a wide range of scholarships for current and aspiring business aviation professionals, and in the coming year will provide nearly $100,000 in cash awards for tomorrow’s industry leaders. Applications for five of these scholarships are now available online, with awards available for college sophomores, juniors and seniors who are preparing for a career in business aviation. NBAA Launches New Twitter-Based Advocacy Tool

It’s one of the most exciting new developments in NBAA’s ongoing government relations and advocacy program: Twitter messaging from the Association’s Contact Congress web page, which enables users to ‘tweet’ their Congressional representatives with important advocacy messages on behalf of business aviation. “With our traditional Contact Congress process, advocacy messages are e-mailed to the elected officials or submitted directly through their websites,” said Jason Wolf, NBAA director of Internet communications. “But with the new Twitter-based system, messages are sent as tweets that will be seen by Congressional staff, the media and even an activist’s own Twitter followers. NBAA Members: Is the Sequester Impacting Your Customs Services?

NBAA wants to hear from Members about any effects from sequestration at Customs and Border Protection, as pilots entering the country may be the first to experience significant effects as the impact of across-the-board cuts to government agencies takes hold. For example, staffing reductions throughout that agency, including at U.S. ports of entry, may lead to longer processing times for aircraft flying into the United States. NBAA remains engaged in talks with multiple federal agencies on ways to mitigate the impact from the sequester on business aviation operations. NBAA Letter to FAA Underscores Industry’s Pressing Tower-Closure Concerns

As the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) finalizes a plan for closing nearly 170 air traffic control towers and other facilities, NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen wrote the FAA to outline the business aviation community’s significant concerns with the plan, and offer proposals for mitigating the situation. In his letter, sent to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta and Chief Operating Officer David Grizzle, Bolen noted that NBAA Members are strongly supportive of the tower facilities, and that the industry wants to work with the agency to keep the largest number possible in operation. Business Aviation Works to Mitigate Sequester’s Impact

At the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) 38th Forecast & Policy Summit, held March 6 in Washington, DC, NBAA Chief Operating Officer Steve Brown reported on his work to represent the interests of business aviation in recent discussions between government leaders and aviation stakeholders focused on mitigating the impact of the sequester, or federal budget cuts that could impact vital air services. “We in the business aviation community recognize the unique and challenging nature of this situation, but we also want to ensure we have a seat at the table as FAA officials consider how best to continue aviation system operations in a safe and equitable manner,” Brown told those in attendance at the opening panel for the FAA event. As a former associate FAA administrator himself, Brown is one of a handful of industry stakeholders working closely with government officials on sequester-related matters. NBAA Thanks Retiring Sandy Wirtz for Tireless Service to Association, Industry

The Association announced today that Sandy Wirtz is retiring as NBAA director, seminars, effective March 15. Wirtz has been with NBAA for 17 years, and has led the overall logistics planning and execution for NBAA’s seminars, conferences, workshops and committee meetings. “In countless cities and towns, Sandy Wirtz has worked hard to run NBAA events effectively and efficiently,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “She has long been a recognized and respected figure in the business aviation community, and her contributions to the Association and industry will be missed.” Wirtz plans to return to her hometown of St. Louis, MO to spend time with her family and provide support to various volunteer projects. New Website Encourages Careers in Industry
A new jobs and career website for pilots, flight attendants, aviation technicians, aviation managers and other aviation professionals has been launched by a diversified industry group called Aviation Workforce Development, Inc. (AWD). Tara Harl, executive director of AWD and chair of NBAA’s Professional Development Subcommittee, described AWD as the aviation industry’s support organization for entry, advancement, leadership development and issue resolution in aviation careers, including business aviation. AWD’s web pages provide career information for airlines, the military, manufacturing, unmanned aircraft operations, air traffic control, government, airports and general aviation. Michigan Group Opposes Proposed GA User Fees

The Michigan Aeronautics Commission recently sent a letter to its congressional delegation opposing the proposed $100-per-flight user fee as a fund-raising mechanism. “We think that type of tax is a job killer,” said Michigan Business Aviation Association (MBAA) chairman and Michigan Aeronautics Commission member Roger Salo, who added that MBAA has been pursuing the user-fee issue since it came up at a recent meeting. “We thought there was some urgency to communicate that to our state representatives. We were pleased that [the commission] supported it.” The letter emphasized strong ties between local job growth and the continued prosperity of the state’s general aviation industry.
