The business aviation community has always supported the development and use of technologies for Communications, Navigation and Surveillance and Air Traffic Management that enhance the safety and efficiency of aircraft operations. As various technologies have come into production, businesses in the industry have made the needed investments to incorporate the equipment involved into cockpits and airframes.

Data link technologies can alleviate audio congestion on radio frequencies thereby increasing airspace capacity, direct routing and allowing for faster clearances with auto-acceptance.

Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVRs) / Flight Data Recorders (FDRs)

A Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) records radio transmissions and sounds in the aircraft's cockpit, such as the pilot's voices and engine noises while a Flight Data Recorder (FDR) records aircraft parameters such as altitude, airspeed and heading.

Minimum Navigation Performance Specifications (MNPS)

The concept of Minimum Navigation Performance Specifications (MNPS) has been adopted on a world-wide basis by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). MNPS has the objective of ensuring safe lateral separation of aircraft and of enabling operators to derive maximum economic benefit from the improvement in accuracy of navigation equipment which has been demonstrated in recent years.

Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (RVSM)

RVSM refers to airspace between flight level (FL) 290 and FL 410, with assigned altitudes separated by a minimum of 1,000 feet rather than the 2,000-foot minimum separation currently required above FL 290. The regulations ensure that operators and their aircraft are properly qualified and equipped to conduct flight operations while separated by 1,000 feet, and ensure that compliance with the RVSM requirements is maintained.

Global Positioning System (GPS)

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based radio-navigation system consisting of a constellation of satellites and a network of ground stations used for monitoring and control. A minimum of 24 GPS satellites orbit the Earth at an altitude of approximately 11,000 miles providing users with accurate information on position, velocity, and time anywhere in the world and in all weather conditions.

Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs) are emergency beacons carried aboard aircraft to notify search-and-rescue personnel when an aircraft is down. There are several types of ELTS, and most U.S. civil aircraft are required to carry one.

Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) is an airborne system that operates independently from the ground-based Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. TCAS was designed to increase cockpit awareness of proximate aircraft and to serve as a 'last line of defense' for the prevention of mid-air collisions.

Turbine-powered airplanes with 6 or more passenger seats are required to have Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS)/Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) equipment on board.

Two FAA-managed ADS-B tools – the Service Availability Prediction Tool (SAPT) and ADS-B Deviation Authorization Pre-Flight Tool (ADAPT) – are back online after a short outage earlier this month.
