MEDIA ADVISORY: NBAA’s Week of Aviation Excellence Will Focus on Leadership in Safety & More, Oct. 5-9

Washington, DC, Sept. 25, 2020 –  The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) will host a weeklong slate of events recognizing and building upon the industry’s hallmark characteristic – excellence – throughout the week of Oct. 5-9, 2020.

“This year, it’s more important than ever for our industry to come together, recognize innovative leadership, and seize this moment to strive for new heights,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “We’re going to gather virtually, learn together and plan for the future.”

The program includes two, first-time virtual events: a dedicated Virtual Safety Week, honoring and further advancing leadership in safety, a core industry value, and also a designated day to honor young business aviation leaders from across the industry who are making a difference.

Monday, Oct. 5, 2020

  • NBAA 2020 Virtual Single-Pilot Safety Standdown – Session One

11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. (EDT)

The day will start with a session featuring leaders from across the aviation spectrum -military, Part 91, airlines – who will explore ways to obtain a higher level of aircraft mastery in single-pilot operations through training and experience.

  • NBAA 2020 Virtual Single-Pilot Safety Standdown – Session Two

 1  –   2 p.m. ( EDT)

What to do when there’s ambiguity about an aircraft’s behavior? This session will explore that question, based on a real-life experience from a Citation Jet pilot.

Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020

  • NBAA 2020 Virtual Single-Pilot Safety Standdown – Session Three

11 a.m. – Noon (EDT)

The complexities of approach and landing drive a significant percentage of accidents. Learn from the experts how to plan and execute a stable approach, and reduce your chances of becoming a statistic.

  • NBAA 2020 Virtual 40 Under 40 Awards Ceremony

Noon – 1 p.m. (EDT)

NBAA will host an online 40 Under 40 Awards show, complete with an interactive, pre-event red-carpet ceremony, and awards presentation.

  • NBAA 2020 Virtual Single-Pilot Safety Standdown – Session Four

1 – 2:30 p.m. (EDT)

Cirrus Aircraft’s Todd Simmons will share his experiences as a business and personal aviator, and how a culture of safety shapes his company. The American Bonanza Society’s Tom Turner will walk through a real-world, stress-filled flight to highlight the importance of standard operating procedures. 

Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020

  • Safety Town Hall With the Kings, Miles O’Brien and Richard McSpadden.

11 a.m. – Noon  (EDT)

The town hall will include the presentation of NBAA’s new Above and Beyond Airmanship Award, and feature a safety town hall panel discussion with:

  • Aviation’s premiere journalist, Miles O’Brien, as moderator
  • Living legends John and Martha King, of King Schools
  • Former Thunderbirds lead pilot, and current Aircraft Owners and Pilots
  • Association Aviation Safety Institute Executive Director Richard McSpadden.

Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020

  • NBAA National Safety Forum – Day One

  11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. (EDT)

  1 –  2 p.m. (EDT)

The day will begin with a presentation of NBAA’s Tony Kern Professionalism in Aviation Awards, then move to opening remarks from association President and CEO Ed Bolen, who will introduce experts in the fields of medicine, fatigue, and psychology, to unpack what you may not know about the latest discoveries in aviation safety.

Friday, Oct. 9, 2020

  • NBAA National Safety Forum – Day Two

11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. (EDT)

  1 – 2 p.m. (EDT)

The week will wrap up with a recognition of excellence, including a presentation of NBAA’s 50- and 60-Year Flying Safety Awards. National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt will provide a keynote address, including his first-hand perspectives on enhancing business aviation safety.
