The FAA’s second annual National Drone Safety Awareness Week kicks off on Monday, Nov. 16, with events planned throughout the week to highlight the impact drones have on communities across the country, as well as the importance of operators’ learning how to safely share the airspace with manned aircraft.
“NBAA supports National Drone Safety Awareness Week and events like it because of the criticality of safe integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and other innovative technologies into the National Airspace System,” said Heidi Williams, NBAA’s director of air traffic services and infrastructure. “Traditional operators and new entrant members of the industry are all working together to ensure safety is a priority. This weeklong event demonstrates that commitment from the FAA and industry.”
NBAA is also actively engaging the drone industry through its new Emerging Technologies Committee. The committee recently published the first content in a series on Safety Management System (SMS) guidance for UAS operators. The group plans to publish additional guidance on SMS and other safety issues unique to drone operations in the future.
Drone operators are encouraged to host events and register these events to share their safety initiatives. Last year’s National Drone Safety Awareness Week featured 128 individual events. Learn more about registering an event.
Participants in National Drone Safety Awareness Week also are encouraged to take art in social media related to the event, using the hashtag #DroneWeek.
National Drone Safety Awareness Week is hosted by the FAA in partnership with the Unmanned Aircraft Safety Team and Know Before You Fly.
