An Evolved Emergency Response Plan: Integration of Head and Heart

Room 4

SEBA Levels All: General

Presented by: Dr. Carolyn V. Coarsey, PhD, Aviem International/Family Assistance Foundation and Jeff Morgan, Aviem International/Family Assistance Foundation

Effective emergency response planning requires integration of head and heart. Previous accident responses reveal that the human element of the response may represent 90% of the resources required, while 10% was dedicated to technical, investigative and safety issues. With the evolution of emergency planning in aviation, many can identify the critical tasks necessary in an emergency response. What is often missing is the necessary skill set required to effectively carry out those tasks. This Session will look at the research behind the most effective approach to helping people following an accident and how this approach is integrated with other critical components of an effective emergency response plan including activation, notification, operations, logistics and technical activities. The Session will include examples on the importance of “how” to carry out important tasks, as well as confirming those tasks that are important to a successful response.

Making Intelligent Decisions When Faced with an International Crisis

Room 3

SEBA Levels 2 – 3: Intermediate

Presented by: Charlie LeBlanc, Medex Global Solutions, and Tom Winn, Medex Global Solutions

When putting together your international flight itinerary, do you include security as part of your checklist? The global environment in which we live today requires us to be aware and alert to the political and cultural situations outside our U.S. borders. Not only do we need to be aware of political, economic and crime trends in the country we may be traveling to, but we also need to have a contingency plan in place in the event an emergency departure is required. Where do you start? Who do you contact? And what needs to be included in this plan? How do you make sure your passengers, crew, and aircraft are safe and secure? This Session will provide answers to these questions and provide guidance on the basics needed to put your plans together.

Aircraft Performance & Flight Deck Basics

Room 4

SEBA Level 1, Beginner

Presented by: Jeffrey M. Daniels, CAM, Motta International

Flight schedulers often wonder why the answer is sometimes “Yes,” and sometimes “No,” when you ask if you can use a particular airport. How can something sometimes be safe, and sometimes not safe, at the same airport? Aircraft performance issues, in conjunction with weather variables, can make or break trips. Knowing an aircraft’s capabilities and the variables that affect its performance can help a scheduler anticipate scheduling issues before they actually become problems. Attendees will learn about these variables, get a basic understanding of the pilots’ world on the flight deck and the instruments they use to make safety of flight decisions.
