The Artistry of Positive Change: The Top Three Habits of Agile Leaders

We all face emergencies and crises. Darby Allen shows us how to overcome them. In the spring of 2016, Darby was Regional Fire Chief of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in Canada, an area that encompasses the community of Fort McMurray. He spearheaded the evacuation of the city’s entire population (88,000 residents) with no loss of life while the rest of the world anxiously watched. Throughout the ensuing weeks of operations, he worked tirelessly with first responders and volunteers, who came from across the nation (and globe) to assist. He became known as the face of the Alberta wildfires—and widely celebrated as a national hero. His updates to the media were not only a means of reliable information, but a source of optimism. Darby provided calm reassurance as the lead spokesperson throughout the rescue efforts and was a great example of selfless courage and level-headedness under pressure. Now, he offers guidance on how to be a stoic, quick-thinking leader in tough situations.

The Obstacle is the Way

Presented by: Ryan Holiday

Ryan will spend time with us discussing how overcoming obstacles is a discipline of three critical steps that are interdependent, interconnected, and fluidly contingent. The disciplines are:

  1. How we look at our specific problems, including our attitude or approach
  2. The energy and creativity with which we actively break the problems down and turn them into opportunities
  3. Finally, the cultivation and maintenance of an inner will that allows us to handle defeat and difficulty

In mastering these three disciplines, we have the tools to flip any obstacle upside down. Like Rockefeller, we can be cool under pressure, immune to insults and abuse. We learn how to see opportunity in the darkest of places. We are able to direct our actions with energy and persistence. Like Demosthenes, we can assume responsibility for ourselves—teaching ourselves, compensating for disadvantages, and pursuing our rightful calling and place in the world. And like Lincoln, we realize that life is a trial. It will not be easy, but we are prepared and can give it everything.

In short, we can:

  • See things for what they are.
  • Do what we can.
  • Endure and bear what we must.

Many people believe intuitively there’s a connection to an elusive trait called “presence.” But what exactly is presence, and how do you know you have it?

In this session, Elizabeth Freedman will reveal breakthrough proprietary research on the essential qualities of executive presence and influence, and how those qualities help leaders communicate, build trust, collaborate and execute more effectively. She will define what presence is, why it matters to leaders, and share what isn’t so obvious about presence, even to the most seasoned of leaders.
