NBAA Establishes Safety Manager Certificate Program

NBAA’s Safety Committee and staff – in collaboration with Advanced Aircrew Academy, Convergent Performance and Fireside Partners – has developed a Safety Manager Certificate program that will provide aviation professionals with introductory to intermediate level training on ensuring safety in business aircraft operations.

The six-week program – which is designed for professionals who want to gain the working knowledge to effectively manage a business aviation organization’s safety management efforts, including its safety management system – includes testing in six key areas of safety management:

  • Leadership
  • Safety Policy
  • Safety Risk Management
  • Safety Assurance
  • Safety Promotion
  • Emergency Response

This certificate program, which is scheduled to launch in January 2022, is geared not only for new or potential safety managers, but also seasoned professionals who have recently taken on more safety management responsibilities.

The program will provide a foundation for safety managers who want to gain the tools and skills needed to implement safety best practices.

“As part of industry efforts to improve safety, the NBAA Safety Manager Certificate program will provide a foundation for safety managers who want to gain the tools and skills needed to implement or sustain safety best practices,” said Mark Larsen, NBAA’s director of safety and flight operations.

Professional Development

NBAA will kick off the 2022 professional development program (PDP) season by offering three courses in conjunction with the 2022 Schedulers & Dispatchers Conference (SDC2022) and one course in conjunction with the 2022 Leadership Conference. Below are detailed descriptions for these PDP courses.

SMS for Business Aviation

This course, slated to be held in San Diego, CA on Jan. 17, the day before the Schedulers & Dispatchers Conference, will review all aspects of Safety Management Systems (SMS), including benefits of an SMS, safety policy and objectives, safety risk management, safety assurance and safety promotion. Both FAA and ICAO guidance will be reviewed. By fully understanding SMS concepts, course participants will be able to contribute to the development of an SMS for their operation, or simply support an existing SMS.

Essentials in Scheduling and Dispatch for Business Aviation

This two-day course (Jan. 17-18), which will be held in conjunction with the Schedulers & Dispatchers Conference in San Diego, CA, is designed for professionals who already have a dispatch license and wish to update their knowledge and skills. The course also is open to advanced-level schedulers who are considering enrolling in a dispatch license program. Topics to be covered include FARs, advanced planning and preflight requirements, flight planning, preflight briefings and inflight support considerations.

Practical B&GA Leadership and Influencing Skills for Everyone

This one-day workshop (Jan. 18) will be held in conjunction with the Schedulers & Dispatchers Conference in San Diego, CA. The session will focus on what aviation professionals need, regardless of title and experience, to gain valuable leadership skills and tools to foster team engagement, improve communication, encourage collaboration, motivate and influence others, and build an overall culture of safety and service.

Planning to Excel

This one-day course, to be held on Feb. 6, the day before the Leadership Conference in Fort Worth, TX, will focus on the importance of strategic planning. Using the Planning to Excel™ system, the session will combine the basics with a proven system that uses a unique proprietary model to make planning a logical, understandable and easy-to-implement process. Originally developed by the U.S. Air Force, this model has been successfully used by large and small organizations.
