Gen. Lloyd “Fig” Newton has been named to the newly created position of chair emeritus on the NBAA Board of Directors. Newton formerly served as board chair.

NBAA’s board recently amended the association’s bylaws to create the new position. The purpose is to retain, for a limited time, the extraordinary talent of select board members who are no longer eligible for board service because they no longer qualify or have served the maximum number of terms on the board. While individuals named chair emeritus are not formally directors, they will, in general, attend board meetings and provide guidance and mentorship to other directors.

The appointment as chair emeritus is for an initial one-year term and up to three total years of service is allowed.

“I accepted the new position because I think NBAA brings great value to the business and civil aviation community and I wanted to continue to be involved with that,” Newton said.

“Also, I have thoroughly enjoyed my association with the professionals in this industry, especially the young professionals entering the marketplace today,” he added. “I want to continue to add my support when and wherever I can to help grow this important component of our economy.”

Newton retired in 2000 from the United States Air Force as a four-star general. Serving for more than three decades, he flew 269 combat missions in Vietnam, flew with the U.S. Air Force Demonstration Team “The Thunderbirds,” served as a congressional liaison to the U.S. House of Representatives for the Air Force and led the Air Education and Training Command, which consisted of 13 bases, 43,000 active-duty personnel and 14,000 civilians.

After leaving the Air Force, Newton worked at Pratt & Whitney as executive vice president of international military programs and business development until 2006. In 2018, he was honored as the recipient of the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy for his extraordinary achievements as a history-making military aviator and his continuing contributions to the advancement of aviation education and advocacy.
