A professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU), who is also a doctoral candidate at Capella University, is conducting research to investigate the cognitive processes employed by pilots during extended, extreme in-flight emergencies, and business aviation pilots can help support his work.
The purpose of the study, being conducted by Clint R. Balog, an NBAA Member representative, is to develop an understanding of how cognitive processes, such as risk assessment, problem solving, and decision making work in successfully overcoming emergencies.
Balog is recruiting participants for the study; participation entails an interview lasting about two hours and conducted at each participant’s location.
The following criteria must be met to qualify as a participant for the study:
- The pilot must have been acting as a legal Pilot In Command under either civilian or military authority.
- The pilot must have experience with an emergency of such a nature that the manufacturer’s emergency procedures were either invalid or inadequate to fully resolve the situation, and the original flight plan had to be abandoned.
- The aircraft involved in the emergency was ultimately returned to the ground under full or partial control, and the loss of life was less than total.
