Flight departments often must deal with the gray area in fitness for duty, and it can be challenging, especially when it comes to personal issues. If the conversations about what’s happening outside the aircraft, such as divorce or financial difficulties, are intruding into the aircraft, “then we’ve lost our ability to compartmentalize those safety-sensitive responsibilities that we have,” said Dr. Quay Snyder, president, CEO and co-founder of Aviation Medicine Advisory Service.
