Tales from the Flight Deck: Emergency Landing in Iran

“Well my mama told me there’ll be days like this.” In December 2012, a Falcon 900 made an emergency landing in Iran. This is the redemptive story from the perspective of the dispatcher who took the call. The emotional discussion will include the lead-up of events, recovery of crew and aircraft, and lessons learned along the way.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers and Canadian Customs experts will discuss the latest changes and best practices for entering Canada and the U.S. Together, we will identify opportunities for improvement and discuss areas for future collaboration.

Regional Review: India and the Middle East

This session will cover geopolitical considerations and operational highlights for successfully navigating the India and the Middle East region. Key topics will include best practices, notable operational updates, primary business aviation airports, cultural sensitivities and what to expect on the ground. An experienced pilot will also cover the application process for use of enhanced vision systems for lower than standard takeoff and landing minima in India.

In-House Mission Planning – Beyond the Basics

This panel session maps out the mission planning tasks, from the trip reservation stage through departure day. Panelists will discuss airport analysis, flight planning, fatigue/flight risk, handling and planning with executive admins. Differing perspectives will provide all flight departments insights and tips on how to maximize dispatcher and crewmember trip collaboration and operational control.

Regional Review: Mexico and the Caribbean

All our favorite vacation destinations across the beautiful country of Mexico and the island nations of the Caribbean will be explored in this session. Our Mexico experts will review the latest operational guidelines, including standard practices – and how they aren’t always so standard. Our Caribbean experts will highlight numerous airports across the Antilles and how to avoid missing out on parking during those busy holiday periods. We will review best practices and potential issues to watch out for while on your next tropical journey.

SMS – No Longer A Voluntary Solution

On Jan. 10, 2023, the FAA released a proposal to expand mandatory compliance with SMS standards to Part 135 operators along with air tours and certain Part 21 certificate holders. In addition to broadening the scope of affected operators and certificates, the FAA is also proposing changes to the requirements of the SMS program itself. This session will review the FAA’s proposal, share industry insights on SMS adoption and what you can do to respond to the FAA’s proposal.

Oceanic ATC Update: A Business Aviation Report Card

A flight crew must execute many tasks and procedures perfectly to make a safe oceanic crossing. However, it also takes perfect coordination with support crews, flight planners, other aircraft and air traffic control. Occasionally, errors happen. In this session, you will learn some of the most common oceanic crossing errors and have an opportunity to hear from the controllers that ensure things go right beyond your flight deck. They will explain how business aircraft operators can help them and be available to answer the questions you have always wanted to ask an oceanic controller.

Southeast Asia and the Pacific, post-covid, is open and getting back up to normal operations! This session will cover two viewpoints. First, you’ll hear a ground handler’s perspective for a high level update of the changes over the last year that you need to know. Second, you’ll hear the pilot’s viewpoint on flying to the region, covering the issues to look out for when traveling to this region.

Regional Review: Africa

In this session, you’ll hear about experiences operating in Africa, one of the fastest growing and most challenging areas in the world. You’ll get a review of factors and considerations you should be thinking about when flying into the top African destinations. Deep Water Ditching

Every flight crew needs a plan of action to address and mitigate threats, especially on flights overwater. Until now the tough questions such as ditching at night or in low visibility got little if any attention and there is little guidance available. This session will review the risks of deep water ditching and will provide flight crews with a well-thought-out checklist that utilizes technology available to all modern global flight departments. Review procedures for deep water ditching – from the first indication a ditch may be imminent, all the way to the time of rescue. Topics include sea state, aircraft floating posture, potential rescue ship type, free board and more.

Crew Safety & Security Panel

Crisis management planning and training for business flight operations often focuses on security incidents on the ground, after the aircraft has arrived at its destination. In light of large-scale geopolitical and security developments in 2022, which involved airspace threats in Ukraine and China/Taiwan, we will be exploring what to plan for and how to react when a security situation transpires within range of the aircraft while en route to its destination. In this panel for 2023, John Anderson from the FAA’s Threat Analysis Division will discuss the events involving Ukrainian airspace and other relevant conflict scenarios that have occurred in recent years, along with tips and considerations for future planning.
