The next phase of a significant Florida Metroplex airspace optimization project begins Aug. 12, as 93 new procedures, including STARs, SIDs and SIAPs, are implemented.
The FAA published a number of new procedures in April to give pilots, dispatchers, controllers and other stakeholders an opportunity to prepare for this major change to the metroplex.
“Operators can expect the FAA Command Center to issue traffic management initiatives, including multiple airspace flow programs during the first week to ensure a smooth implementation,” said Ernie Stellings, NBAA’s Air Traffic Services senior manager. “Pilots should review NOTAMs carefully to be prepared for new procedures and expect possible delays.”
The traffic management initiatives (TMIs) will enable the FAA to review implementation of new procedures, and the agency will gradually lift the TMIs when it is safe to do so. The FAA will take weather conditions into consideration before implementing TMIs.
Procedure changes will be implemented at Orlando International Airport (MCO), Orlando Executive Airport (ORL), Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), Punta Gorda Airport (PGD), St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) and Tampa International Airport (TPA), among others.
This project has been in the works for years, but implementation was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although the FAA has planned carefully to ensure a smooth transition, operators are encouraged to share feedback or concerns with NBAA’s Air Traffic Services.
