Washington, DC – The Board of Directors of the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) has selected Stuart Matthews, president and CEO of Flight Safety Foundation, as the recipient of the 2004 NBAA Award for Meritorious Service to Aviation. Past NBAA Chairman Allan B. Lane, retired aviation manager and chief pilot for BP Amoco, will receive the 2004 NBAA John P. “Jack” Doswell Award.
The Award for Meritorious Service to Aviation is presented annually to an individual who, by virtue of a lifetime of personal dedication, has made significant, identifiable contributions that have materially advanced aviation interests. The Doswell Award is granted for lifelong individual achievement on behalf of and in support of the aims, goals and objectives of business aviation.
Stuart Matthews
Born in London in 1936, Stuart Matthews has more than 50 years of aviation experience, including numerous senior management positions in both aircraft manufacturing and airline operations. Under his leadership, the prevention of approach-and-landing accidents (ALAs), including those involving controlled flight into terrain (CFIT), and safety auditing of airlines under internationally agreed standards have been a high priority for the Flight Safety Foundation.
Since 1994, Matthews has been the president and chief executive officer of the Flight Safety Foundation, a major international, not-for-profit organization whose sole mission is the advancement of air safety. In this position, he is responsible for the development and implementation of the organization’s worldwide activities. As an industry spokesman on aviation safety matters, he has served on numerous U.S. national and foreign government committees and has dealings with senior aviation executives and other industry officials around the globe. He has given speeches worldwide on topics that include the prevention of ALAs, safety auditing standards, criminal investigation of aircraft accidents, and risk and responsibility.
Between 1974 to 1994, Matthews served as president and CEO, and later as chairman, of Fokker Aircraft USA. Earlier in his career, he also held positions with British Caledonian Airways, British Island Airways, British Aircraft Corporation and DeHavilland Aircraft (later Hawker Siddeley Aviation). He is a member of the Executive Committee of the U.S. Commercial Aviation Safety Team, the industry and government group charged with implementing the U.S. national aviation safety agenda; he serves as a member of the Executive Oversight Committee monitoring NASA’s Safety Research Team; he serves on ICAO’s Industry Advisory Committee on technological safety developments; and he chairs the curriculum oversight committee of the Aviation Safety Alliance formed by the major U.S. airlines.
Matthews earned a degree in aeronautical and mechanical engineering from Hertfordshire University. He is a chartered engineer, a fellow with the Royal Aeronautical Society, a fellow with the Chartered Institute of Transport and an associate fellow with the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics. Having built and flown his own aircraft at the age of 19 while a student, he earned his private pilot’s license in 1953 and held a commission in the British Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve from 1959 to 1972.
Allan B. Lane
Allan B. Lane served 11 years on the NBAA Board of Directors from 1989 to 2000, serving as chairman from 1994 to 1996. During his tenure on the Board, he contributed to the founding and success of several Membership programs that promoted NBAA and business aviation in local communities nationwide.
Lane joined Amoco (now BP Amoco) as a Lockhead JetStar copilot in 1968, becoming chief pilot in 1978 and manager of aviation in 1985. Ultimately he was put in charge of Amoco’s worldwide aviation activities, serving as aviation manager/chief pilot. He retired from BP Amoco in 2000.
As a Director on the NBAA Board, Lane had a leadership and visionary role in establishing NBAA’s Regional Representative program, in which NBAA Staff members who act as representatives for various regions of the United States are based outside of Washington Headquarters. The program was founded in 1998, and currently, NBAA employs five Regional Reps based in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest and Western regions of the United States. Lane also promoted the development of local business aviation organizations and initiated the NBAA REACHBAC Program, a series of outreach events that bring NBAA Headquarters Staff members and Regional Reps to local U.S. business aviation communities.
Furthermore, Lane was a catalyst in creating Travel$ense, NBAA’s business travel productivity-tracking software, an earlier incarnation of which was used by Lane’s Amoco flight department. He also initiated the founding of the NBAA Chairman’s Charity Classic, a golf tournament now in its eighth year that annually raises tens of thousands of dollars for charities in NBAA Annual Meeting & Convention host cities.
Prior to his Board service, Lane served as chairman of the NBAA Corporate Aviation Management Committee and was a member of the NBAA Airspace/Air Traffic Committee. He also established the Chicago Area Business Aviation Association.
