NBAA is now accepting nominations for the 2020 Dr. Tony Kern Professionalism in Aviation Award. This award was established in 2015 and recognizes individual pilots, maintenance technicians, flight attendants, dispatchers, and others who have demonstrated exemplary leadership and professionalism to advance business aviation safety.
Nominations for individuals in the business aviation community that may warrant recognition by this prestigious award are submitted through the online application available on the NBAA Kern Award site until May 31, 2020. A complete nomination package for this award will include:
- Completed nomination form
- The nominee’s professional resume
- One letter of recommendation that supports the nomination written by a member of the business aviation community who is not the nominator
Members of the NBAA Safety Committee will conduct a peer review to ensure each nominee meets the tenets of Dr. Kern’s Integrated Model of Professionalism. Nominating authors are strongly encouraged to provide specific evidence related to their candidate’s vocational excellence, professional ethics, continuous improvement, professional engagement, professional image and selflessness.

Fellow Safety Committee member and Kern award co-coordinator Lauren Hanna added, “these individuals have furthered safety – business aviation’s most important value – and it’s incredibly special to see these highly dedicated and accomplished professionals receive special recognition in front of their colleagues and families.”
The 2020 NBAA Dr. Tony Kern Professionalism in Aviation Award will be presented to this year’s recipients in conjunction with NBAA’s Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition in Orlando, FL, October 6-8.
Kern is co-founder of Convergent Performance, a firm dedicated to reducing human risk environments. A retired command and B-1B pilot examiner, he chaired the Air Force Human Factors Steering Group. Author of five books on human performance, Kern is a recognized expert on professionalism. Rather than calling out unprofessional behavior, Kern said at the award’s debut in 2015, “This award is about recognizing the many true professionals in our industry who are all doing very positive things.”
