Podcast: FAA, Industry Grappling With Response to Coming 5G Rollout – What Should You Know?

Dec. 20, 2021

As the U.S. aviation industry prepares for the imminent rollout of new 5G telecommunications networks across the country, the FAA has issued two ADs restricting certain aircraft operations over concerns about potential interference from 5G on radar altimeters. In light of the many functions on business aircraft that rely on radar altimeter data, NBAA Access Committee member Rich Boll recommends that pilots “keep their hands on the control yoke or control stick and throttles any time the aircraft is 1,000 feet agl or less, and stay in tune with what the airplane is doing and what these automated systems are doing, and be prepared to take immediate manual control of the aircraft if the situation warrants.”

In this episode of NBAA’s “Flight Plan,” host Rob Finfrock speaks with:
  • Clay Barber, principal engineer, Garmin International
  • Rich Boll, chair, Airspace, Air Traffic and Flight Technologies Working Group of the NBAA Access Committee
  • Andrew Roy, director, engineering services, Aviation Spectrum Resources Inc.
